About the Project

The Skinner Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Skinner name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Skinner name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Skinners), by time period (18th Century Skinners), or by topic (Skinner DNA,Skinner Occupations, Skinner Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

I am Sheri Skinner. Apparently I am Skinner – 12539. I would prefer to remain off Social Media if at all possible. However, here is my brick wall: My great great grandfather was Daniel L. Skinner (10/11/1815-7/23/1877). He married Margaret Ginn (7/8/1818-12/11/1886) in Ohio on 5/21/1840 and they had a number of children. I know this because I have Dan and Margaret’s family bible. I’m in the process of putting his wife and kids into the WikiTree for them/me.

Here’s the thing: Dan seems insistent that he was born in Morris, New Jersey. He is, however, very secretive about his parentage. All documents that should have included his parents’ names and state/country of origin are blank on this or say “unknown”. Why the secrecy? Where did he come from? His history from birth to age 25 at which time he plopped down in Ohio and married Margaret, is a blank. Can anyone help? Many thanks! Sheri
