About the Project

The Skinner Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Skinner name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Skinner name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Skinners), by time period (18th Century Skinners), or by topic (Skinner DNA,Skinner Occupations, Skinner Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How to Join

To join the Skinner Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

• From Middle English skynner, skinner, skynnere, schynnere, equivalent to skin +‎ -er. Cognate with Old Norse skinnari (“skinner”), Old Swedish skinnare (“skinner”), Middle Low German schinder, schinner (“skinner”). [2]

The Skinner Family Association

The Skinner Family Association has collected data on various Skinner lines in the USA, UK, and others minor lines around the world that have not connected yet.

Over the last 30+ years of our existence, the Skinner Family Association has collected over 25,000 Skinners and Skinner descendants. http://skinnerkinsmen.org

The bulk of our data base has been transferred to trees available on Ancestry.com. We continue to add names and data to the trees as we receive it.

We have much data on many minor trees which we have yet to find connections to either in the USA or UK.

Skinner Lines

We have found that there are 4 major SKINNER lines in the USA:

• Thomas Skinner of Malden, Massachusetts (c1617-1704).
• John Skinner of Hartford, Connecticut (c1615-1650).
• Richard Skinner of Woodbridge, New Jersey (c1664-1727).
• Britton Skinner of Marblehead, Massachusetts (1763-??).

In Bermuda there is at least 1 line originating with Isaac Skinner 1760-1805, shipbuilder in Harris Bay.
